Find your perfect Sunday lunch with our roast round up (2022)

There’s something a little ritualistic about settling down on a Sunday for a gigantic roast dinner. You’ve worked hard all week and now nothing is going to satisfy you quite like a monstrous portion of roasted happiness and smotherings of gravy.

Our ongoing love affair with roasts has evolved over the years to include Instagrammable veg, giant Yorkies and hipster gravy boats. No longer will we have to endure lumpy gravy and soggy broccoli - we want glistening joints, posh presentation and a smoked salmon starter.

Dining establishments have responded to our new, Sunday dinner standards by upping their roast game, you can now find some cracking roast dinners across Cardiff, you can pick a different every Sunday and eat your way around if you so wish.

And yes, we know that no-one makes a roast that's as good as your mam's, but here are our picks of the places we think do some of the best Sunday roasts in Cardiff (in no particular order).

Meanwhile, if you're after the best grub for other days of the week in Cardiff you can try out our definitive guide to eating in the city.

Bar 44

We know what you're thinking. Why is a Spanish tapas restaurant on our list of superb roast dinners in the city? Well, it may come as a surprise but alongside doing tantalisingly tasty tapas dishes, Bar 44 - whose sister restaurant is Spanish grill and wine house Asador 44 - does an absolutely amazing roast dinner platter on Sundays.

That's right. Not just a plate, but a whole platter-full of deliciousness. Recommended for two or more, this roast comes with the choice - for meat-eaters - of a 35-day dry aged picanha (type of cut) of Hereford beef with horseradish alioli and served rare or an overnight slow-roasted Duroc pork belly with Amontillado sherry apple sauce.

Both are served with a sumptuous selection of chorizo yorkshire pudding, jamón-fat roast potatoes with rosemary, garlic and thyme, manchego cauliflower cheese, savoy cabbage with herb butter, roast carrots with honey and thyme and, to top it off, a smothering of red wine gravy. Not a meat-eater? Fear not. For veggies, you can have a celeriac steak with the same sides, although the meaty aspects are substituted for something equally as delicious.

Pasture Cardiff

If you've ever been to Pasture then you'll know that they do steak incredibly. And so it should come as no surprise that their roast dinners, which heavily feature said steak - which is cooked over coal and cherry wood, yum! - in a variety of options, is equally as mouth-watering.

You can get two steaks in one, sirloin and fillet, cooked on the bone (£8 per 100g), the “dinosaur” steak, Chateaubriand (£13.00 pe 100g) - which is the prized cut from the fillet, or house cuts of beef. Not a fan of beef? They also do a lamb dish which comes as a sharing feast for two or more to share.

What's more is that this Sunday lunch is a gravy-lover's dream. Let us explain why. With your meat cuts served with the usual cohort of roasties, leek gratin, cabbage "in the coals" and yorkshire puddings, you also get a helping of bottomless gravy. Oh yes.

Not a meat-eater? Its website states it can cater for any allergens, so you're in safe hands.
